When Will Dispensaries Be Open In WV?

Updated: Nov 30, 2021

Important Update: Medical marijuana dispensaries are now open in West Virginia!

When you get your medical marijuana card in West Virginia, you can purchase any medical marijuana products on the shelves at state licensed dispensaries, including marijuana flower, vape cartridges, topicals, capsules and more!

As of November 2021, two cannabis dispensaries have opened in West Virginia and more are on the way. Medical marijuana patients in WV can shop at Trulieve in Morgantown or Weston to get safe, effective, legal cannabis products to treat their conditions and symptoms.

Keep reading to learn more about the evolution of cannabis dispensary openings in WV from this post that was originally written in May 2021.

West Virginia’s medical marijuana program is open for registration but as of now there are no dispensaries open to purchase medical marijuana.

So when are the dispensaries going to be open? Why has the process taken so long?

Cozy on in for a spell and we will tell you everything you need to know!

What’s Going On With WV’s Medical Marijuana Program?

In 2017, Gov. Jim Justice signed Senate Bill 386 which made West Virginia the 29th state in the U.S. to pass a legal medical marijuana program. The bill had overwhelming support with a 28-6 vote in the Senate and a 76-24 vote in the House.

Since this bill was passed, there has been a lot going on behind the scenes to get West Virginia where it needs to be before dispensaries open.

In 2018, the advisory board recommended adding cannabis flower to the program. In 2020, “dry leaf or plant form” was passed via SB 339.

The program was initially delayed because there were concerns about banking services for the medical marijuana businesses in the state. This became of great concern to many when Southern District U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart threated to prosecute businesses that entered into the medical marijuana industry.

In 2019, HB 2538 addressed these issues by allowing credit unions to bid for West Virginia’s account and also added protection for state employees from potential prosecution.

In the same year, SB 1037 passed which allowed vertical integration for dispensaries and also increased the number of dispensaries coming into the state.

As you can see, there is a lot of work being done by the state behind the scenes even though we don’t always see the effects right away.
