High vs Low THC Cannabis Flower

There are many different cannabis products available to patients who have applied for a medical marijuana certification in West Virginia.

Cannabis flower is one of the most popular types of medical cannabis, and patients have a lot of choices at West Virginia dispensaries when it comes to cannabis flower.

From sedating indicas to energetic sativas, West Virginia boasts a robust menu of different strains and an even wider range of THC percentages.

In this article, we’ll cover the difference between high THC cannabis flower and low THC cannabis flower, how patients use them, and why you might choose one over the other.

What Is High THC Cannabis Flower & Who Uses It?

High THC Content Means More Potent Effects

Patients shop cannabis flower in more than a handful of ways, and terpene profiles, strain types, and THC content all play a significant role in the final choice for a medical marijuana patient.

And while THC content plays a big role in how potent the cannabis flower will be, often it is the entourage effect that will most significantly determine how those effects are perceived.

High THC cannabis flower is typically over 20% THC, with some numbers reaching as high as 35%+. Cannabis flower with very high amounts of THC may not have high amounts of CBD.

THC content does matter, and for patients with high tolerances to THC, extreme symptoms, or limited biological sensitivity to THC, accessing flower with higher THC contents can be critical.

On the other side of the equation, lower THC contents will be better for newer patients, patients looking for limited psychoactive effects, and patients who experience anxiety from higher amounts of THC.

High THC Cannabis Flower Isn’t for Everyone

High THC cannabis flower is probably best avoided if you’re brand new to cannabis, have a very low tolerance to cannabis, or if cannabis tends to give you anxiety.

High THC cannabis flower traditionally has much smaller amounts of CBD, which can work to ease the effects of THC. High THC flower can be overwhelming for patients who aren’t looking to treat extreme symptoms or patients with very low tolerances to THC.

However, Patients who have been consuming cannabis for a long time, have severe symptoms like extreme chronic pain, HIV/AIDS, or cancer, or patients who are looking for the maximum psychoactivity from cannabis may specifically look for high THC cannabis flower.

What Is Low THC Cannabis Flower & Who Uses It?

Low THC Cannabis Flower Is Perfect for New Medical Marijuana Patients

Low THC cannabis flower can be very beneficial for newer patients, as they typically haven’t had time to build a high tolerance to THC, and they are usually looking for the smoothest introduction to cannabis as a medicine. A wild rollercoaster ride can come with over-consuming THC.

Low THC cannabis flower usually ranges from 12% - 20% THC and can often be found with higher amounts of CBD.

You can find cannabis flower with high amounts of CBD and lower THC cannabis flower with amounts of CBD in ratios such as 1:1, 2:1, and even 5:1 CBD:THC.

Low THC cannabis flower can still produce significant psychoactive effects depending on the THC content, but the perceivable effects are usually less potent and not as aggressive as high THC cannabis flower.

Low THC Cannabis Flower Is Perfect for Taking Multiple Cannabis Products

Patients taking multiple cannabis products throughout the day may find a lot of benefit with using low THC cannabis flower in their treatment plan.

Many patients take multiple products such as tinctures, pills, flower, and edibles, and in cases where patients find the most benefit using this method, low THC cannabis flower fits into this routine perfectly.

Using high THC cannabis flower alongside other cannabis products can lead to overconsumption of THC, which can cause some unpleasant experiences. Using low THC cannabis flower alongside other products, however, can help reduce your risk of over-consuming THC.

Should I Use High or Low THC Cannabis Flower?

Biology Plays a Big Part in How You Use Cannabis Flower

The single largest factor in how you react to THC is your body.

Two people can have two entirely different tolerances and reactions to THC, regardless of any previous use.

This variance is relatively small, and most people will experience similar effects from using cannabis products. The fact remains that some people will need more THC for biological reasons and some people will need less THC for biological reasons.

How to Choose Between High & Low THC Cannabis Flower

For cannabis flower, pick the lowest THC flower available and use only a small amount to determine where your threshold is.

If you find that it takes a relatively large amount of cannabis flower to produce the desired level of effects (one or two bowls, one full joint, etc.), you might look for cannabis flower with a higher amount of THC when making your next trip to the dispensary.

When you choose cannabis flower with a higher THC percentage, make sure to start with the lowest dose possible again to avoid over-consuming THC. If you were smoking a full bowl previously, perhaps try just a few puffs for example. If you were previously smoking an entire joint to get your desired level of effects, try just a few puffs with higher THC flower.
