West Virginia Medical Marijuana Cards Now Valid for 1 Year

West Virginia took a unique approach when it opened the patient registry up for qualifying patients to apply for a medical marijuana card in West Virginia.

Because the state was aware of the delay between patients applying for their cards and cultivators being operational and selling cannabis products, the state decided to implement an extension on card expirations.

The window for cards with longer expiration dates has officially closed, and all newly issued medical marijuana cards will have an expiration date of 1 year from when they are issued.

West Virginia Extends Medical Marijuana Card Expiration Dates

When medical marijuana programs pass their legislative hurdles and become active there is usually a window of time between cultivators becoming operational and products arriving on dispensary shelves for purchase.

While this window of time is expected for all new medical marijuana programs, few states have managed to implement any meaningful legislation that addresses it.

Louisiana however, immediately identified and addressed this problem by extending the expiration date of medical marijuana cards that were issued before cultivators had become operational.

West Virginia Medical Marijuana Card Extensions & Who Gets Them

Earlier in 2021, West Virginia made extensions available to qualifying patients who received medical marijuana cards, allowing for some overlay between cultivators becoming operational and cardholders waiting for products to arrive.

The card extensions were available to individuals applying for medical marijuana cards by certain dates:

Register by June 30, 2021, card is good for 3 years total (1 year original + 2 years extension)

Register by September 30, 2021, card is good for 2 years total (1 year original + 1 year extension)

Register after October 1, 2021, card is good for 1 year total
