How To Make Edibles?
West Virginia introduced a comprehensive medical marijuana program in 2017, with licensed dispensaries finally opening this year. Patients will have access to multiple forms of medical marijuana, but a bill to add edibles to the list only recently passed the state House and must clear the Senate before it can be signed into law.
Meanwhile, there’s no reason why qualifying patients can’t make their own tasty, cannabis-infused treats. Even with edibles officially available in medical marijuana dispensaries, taking a DIY approach can be a fun and rewarding way to integrate cannabis into your wellness routine.
At West Virginia Marijuana Card, our priority is making sure qualified patients can easily register with West Virginia’s medical marijuana program and receive ongoing support.
Meanwhile, we’re also a top source of cannabis news and lifestyle content. Read on for two awesome recipes for DIY cannabis edibles.
Method 1: Cooking with Cannabutter
If classics like cookies and brownies are your jam, cannabutter is the way to go. This method involves infusing butter or oil with cannabis flowers and then using the mixture to prepare the baked goods of your choice.
While it may be tempting to simply sprinkle some flowers into your traditionally prepared cookie, brownie, or cake mix, this approach will diminish the effect of the cannabis and be a potential waste of the valuable plant.
Preparing an infused butter or oil works better because it involves first heating the flowers to activate the full potential of delta 9 THC, and because the fat present within butter or oil allows for maximum cannabis absorption within your body.
Follow these steps to prepare cannabutter like a pro:
Evenly spread flowers across a baking sheet and place in an oven preheated to 240 degrees.
Bake for 30 minutes for older, dried flowers and 40 minutes for fresh, sticky flowers.
Once flowers have cooled, grind them up without fully pulverizing them. A couple pulses in a food processor will do.
Set the ground cannabis aside and combine one cup of butter and one cup of water in a medium saucepan.
Bring the mixture to a simmer and slowly stir in the ground cannabis. Keep the mixture simmering, but not boiling, for 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
Strain the mixture to separate the flowers from the butter. We recommend spreading a cheese cloth over a mason jar or other airtight container that can be used for storage.
Once your cannabutter is complete, you can refrigerate it for a few weeks or freeze it for up to 6 months. Before adding it to your favorite baked goods, it’s important to get the dosage right.
We recommend you determine the dosage by first adding ¼ of a teaspoon to a cracker or piece of bread. Give yourself two hours to feel the effects before consuming more cannabutter. Add more gradually until you’ve determined the optimal dose for you.
When adding cannabutter to your favorite baked goods, we recommend using one dose per serving. Finally, remember to clearly mark prepared cannabis edibles to distinguish them from regular treats, and store them in a secure location out of children’s reach.
Method 2: Making Cannabis-Infused Gummies
Dispensaries have popularized cannabis gummies, and you can easily explore the trend from the comfort of your own kitchen with this mix-and-go approach.
Gather your ingredients and supplies. You will need:
Gummy molds
Mixing bowl & spoon
Cooking spray
Small turkey baster or dropper
½ ounce cannabis tincture
1 three-ounce packet of gelatin dessert
1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin
½ cup hot water
Prepare your molds by cleaning them and coating with cooking spray.
Mix together cannabis tincture, gelatin dessert, unflavored gelatin, and hot water.
Use turkey baster or dropper to carefully transfer the mixture into the molds.
Place the molds in your refrigerator and allow them to chill for 2 hours or until firm.
As with cannabutter, potency can vary from batch to batch. Start by eating only one gummy and waiting 1-2 hours to gauge the effects. Finally, be sure to store your weed gummies in an airtight container in a cool, dark location away from children and pets.
