West Virginia’s medical marijuana program is expanding, as new patients are signing up for medical marijuana cards and new dispensaries are opening every month.
Alongside Beckley, Williamstown, and St. Albans, Cannabist is opening a new location in Morgantown, West Virginia, where several dispensaries are currently operating.
With a population of approximately 30,000, Morgantown boasts the largest number of dispensaries operating in one city, likely due to its central location in the North of West Virginia.
The West Virginia medical marijuana program is expected to expand this year, with the installation of several new dispensary locations and an increase in product availability as cultivators get more harvests under their belts.
Cannabist Opens Dispensary in Morgantown,
West Virginia
Morgantown, WV Is a Hot Location for Medical Marijuana Dispensaries
Cannabist’s latest dispensary location is at
225 Don Knotts Boulevard Morgantown, West Virginia 26501.
The new dispensary is Cannabist’s 4th and latest location, opening alongside the Trulieve and Zen Leaf locations in Morgantown.
Having multiple dispensaries in the same location isn’t a bad idea either, in fact; when supply is running low, having several options to choose from in the same place can make a big difference.
That’s a big positive for West Virginia, because patients have witnessed a limited availability of cannabis products, with only a few choices in strains and even fewer choices for niche products like concentrates and oral consumables.
Cannabist Dispensaries Will Soon Have More Cannabis Flower
Since Columbia Care, who owns the Cannabist brand, was recently approved for a cultivation license in West Virginia, they’ll likely be pursuing cannabis harvests as soon as possible.
This will almost certainly put Cannabist locations at a significant advantage when it comes to having cannabis flower available. They’ll be able to directly supply their own dispensary locations.
Columbia Care uses the Seed & Strain brand, offering cannabis flower and vape cartridges. Once they can get a few harvests in front of them, they’ll most likely expand their product inventory significantly.
West Virginia is still experiencing a high demand for cannabis flower, and patients are waiting for the installation of more dispensaries.
As cultivators get their operations moving, the availability of cannabis flower will increase, though with only 10 cultivators approved, it may become more restricted if larger numbers of patients register for medical marijuana cards.
What’s Next for West Virginia’s Medical Marijuana Program?
Cannabis Flower Still in High Demand in West Virginia
West Virginia’s medical marijuana program is still relatively new, though that hasn’t slowed the demand for cannabis flower in the Mountain State.
Patients will still find limited choices in dispensaries until more cultivators are harvesting and processing cannabis, though hopefully there will be more products available soon.
Cultivators can harvest cannabis in a fairly broad range, taking anywhere from 2 – 8 months for a successful cannabis harvest.
Cultivator licenses were issued as recently as October 2020, though when considering the time it takes to build and install a large cultivation facility, it’s not surprising that cultivators haven’t managed much more than a few initial harvests.
As cultivators and processors finish construction and facilities come online, more cannabis products will start showing up and cannabis flower will become more consistently available.
What Products Can I Find at West Virginia Dispensaries?
Currently, there are a handful of cannabis products available at West Virginia dispensaries.
Cannabis flower can be found sparingly, and even though cannabis flower is in high demand, strains are available, with hybrid strains being the most common.
Vape cartridges and BHO syringes are available for concentrate users, though there’s only a few products to choose from currently. Trulieve has released a few live budders through the Muse brand, though that’s the only traditional concentrate we’ve seen in West Virginia so far.
You’ll be able to find one or two topicals, as well as a small handful of tinctures, though expect these products to go out of stock fairly quickly as they are also in high demand.
Edibles, pure indica cannabis flower, and concentrates like live resin or rosin are all still very difficult to find, so if you manage to see some on the dispensary shelf it might be a good idea to pick them up while you can.
The medical marijuana program in West Virginia is still getting off to a first start, and more product availability is expected soon. Currently, cannabis products are available in West Virginia, and you can usually find a small variety to choose from at dispensaries.
