Can I Get a Medical Marijuana Card in West Virginia Yet?
This question has been asked to us many times and has been confusing to many but the answer is yes. You can get your medical marijuana card in West Virginia!
So if the answer is yes, then why is it so confusing?
In West Virginia medical marijuana was passed in April of 2017 and went into effect on July 1, 2019 but the process of getting everything up and running has taken even longer. The state has, unfortunately, been very slow to allow registration for medical marijuana cards and even more slow to open up dispensaries.
Up until this past February registering for a medical marijuana card wasn’t available either. Now that it is, West Virginia residents who have received a written recommendation from a certified medical marijuana doctor can submit their documentation to the Department of Health and Human Resources in order to get their medical marijuana card.
The DHRR also announced back in February that there will be 100 businesses that are permitted to open dispensaries in West Virginia. Dispensaries should be open by the end of the year and will be open to patients only if they have their medical marijuana cards. At dispensaries you will be able to purchase medical marijuana products such as the following:
Dry Leaf or plant form
Pills
Oils
Gels, creams, and ointments
Extracts formulated for vaporization or nebulization
Tinctures and other liquids
Dermal patches
If I Get My Medical Marijuana Card Will it Expire Before Dispensaries Open?
This is a valid question. Even though registration is now open for those with qualifying conditions to get a medical marijuana evaluation, many are still afraid that if they do get their medical marijuana card it will be expired by the time dispensaries are actually open in the state.
But not to worry! If you register for your medical marijuana card, your card will have an extension so it will not expire before dispensaries open in the state.
If you register by September 30, 2021, your card will be valid for two years total including the original validity of the card plus one extra bonus year. But if you register on or after October 1, 2021, then the extension will expire and your card will only be valid for the original one year amount.
Now is the time to get your card!
